Why GA4 Numbers Don’t Add Up Across Months

"When I am looking at two months individually I get the number of Active users and sessions for each month, howvere when I add the individual numbers to look a total for 2 months then they don't match the numbers in GA4. What could be wrong", was a question I received recently.

So here is your answer:

Active users are deduped when counting across time frames.  Let’s say, the site has only 1 user, this user comes in Oct and then again in Nov.

In that case

Oct will show 1 user

Nov will show 1 users

And Oct + Nov will also show 1 user, since it is the same person.

Also for the sessions, the same thing applies if the session starts in October (say around midnight on Oct 31s) and then ends in Nov (Nov 1st early morning).  Then that session will only be counted once in the combined report while separately in each month’s data.
