Amplitude has a limit on the number of session replays you can have. If you easily hit that limit and would like to be more selective about which pages the session replays should start on, then this post is for you.
Note: We are using Google Tag Manager to enable Amplitude tracking.
Below are the steps to enable selective session replays (session recording only starts on certain pages):
- Deselect “Session Replay” option in the main Amplitude GTM Initialization
- Create a new trigger condition based on the page URL you want the session replay to start on: ex.: “/membership/”
- Apply that trigger as an “exclusion” in the main Amplitude GTM initialization
- Copy/Create a new Amplitude GTM Initialization tag with “Session Replay” plugin enabled. (specifically for the pages we want to include for session replay.
- Add the trigger above as an inclusion filter
The above directions will deploy the Amplitude SDK WITHOUT the session replay plugin on certain pages, while deploying the SDK WITH the session replay plugin on your focus pages. (Note: these replay sessions will begin on a particular page, so anything prior may be excluded.)
