How to  Customize GA4 Reports

GA4 provides a lot of predefined reports. This blog will explore six practical tips to help you transform standard reports into custom reports that suit your specific needs.

1. Add and Remove Dimensions and Metrics

By adding or removeing dimensions or metrics you can create a report that allows you to focus on the data that matters most to you. For instance, if you want to see "Source and Medium" instead of "Default Channels" in User Acquistion report then you can do that by customizing the User Acquistion report.

To add/remove dimensions and metrics

  1. Go to the desired report
  2. Click on the pencil icon in the top right corner of the report.
  3. This opens the customization options.
  4. Select the dimensions and metrics you want to include in your report.

2. Filter the Report Data

Filters allow you to view the data based on specific criteria that you want. For example, if you want to focus solely on organic search traffic, you can set a filter to only include this traffic type.

To add a filter,

  1. Go to the desired report
  2. Click on the pencil icon in the top right corner of the report.
  3. This opens the customization options.
  4. Click on the "Add filter" option under "Report filter"
  5. Build the desired filter and apply it.

3. Change/Remove Charts

By default two charts are provided on every GA4 detailed report. If the provided charts don't provide you the required insights then you can change and/or remove them. To change/remove a chart

  1. Go to the desired report
  2. Click on the pencil icon in the top right corner of the report.
  3. This opens the customization options.
  4. Click on Charts Options.
  5. To remove a chart click on the "eye" icon next to the chart.
  6. To change the chart, click on the chart option, this will open up a window for you to pick a new chart.
  7. You can also move the chart from 1st position to 2nd position by dragging the chart in "Charts" section (see image below)

4. Add a Secondary Dimension

Adding a secondary dimension can enhance your analysis by providing additional context. For example, if you're looking at organic search traffic, you might want to see which landing pages are driving that traffic.

To add a secondary dimension

  1. Click the plus sign next to your main dimension
  2. This opens up a window with other dimensions
  3. Select the dimension you want
  4. Now secondry dimension is applied to your report.

Changing the Sorting Metric

Sorting your data by different metrics can provide new insights. To change the sorting:

  1. Click on the down arrow next to metrics that you want to sort by
  2. Your data will be sorted by that metrics

Save Your Report

Once you are done customizing the report, can either save the current report with these custom options or you can save it as a new report.

I recommend saving it as a new report. This report will be available in the library option. You can then customize your menu to use this new custom report.

To save the report:

  1. Click on "Save..." option on the top of report.
  2. It will open up a drop down with two options mentioned above.
  3. Click on 'Save as new report' or "Save changes to current report"
