No-Code Event Tracking and Google Analytics 4

There is a lot of buzz about digital analytics companies that do automatic event tracking and that's their main differentiator from GA. These tools are expensive and comparisons with GA is not going to get them the market share they are after. Why? Because GA is free.

I predict that GA will roll out an automatic event tracking feature in GA4. This means many of the customer tracking that you do today will not be required.

In Google Analytics 4, also called GA4, a few events are tracked automatically. They are called Enhanced Measurement Events. You can turn those events off if you would like.

These events are

  • Outbound link tracking
  • On-site search tracking
  • YouTube video tracking
  • Download tracking
  • Page scroll tracking
  • A page view is also tracked as an event

I think it is a matter of time when Google starts to automatically track many more events such as

  1. Button click tracking
  2. Form fill tracking
  3. JavaScrip error tracking
  4. eCommerce tracking

What do you think? I would love to hear your point of view.
