Implementing Piwik PRO using Google Tag Manager

Piwik PRO is a complete platform with it owns Analytics, Tag manager, Consent Manager and a CDP. Just like Google Tag Manager code, you can add Piwik PRO code on your site to start using Piwik PRO.

In Google Tag Manager, you have to enable GA4 tracking using various tags and trigger, howvere with Piwik PRO and all four models, Analytics, Tag Manager, Consent Manager and CDP, are automatically enabled and page view tracking tag is enabled by default for you.

Howvere if you are using Google Tag Manager on your site and can't get Piwik PRO code on the site because either the technical team is too busy or some other organizational issue then you can use Google Tag Manager to implement Piwik PRO code.

In this post I will show you the options you have to implement Piwik PRO code using Google Tag Manager code.

Option 1:  Add Entire Piwik PRO Code using Custom HTML tag in GTM

If use this option then you will have all four Piwik PRO modules activated on your site.

To use this option

  1. Go to Piwik PRO Administration section
  2. Pick the site that you want to activate Piwik PRO for and get the installation code
  3. In Google Tag Manager create a Custom HTM tag
  4. Add the Piwik PRO in the custom HTML.
  5. Assign "All Pages" trigger
  6. Save and publish

Now you have Piwik PRO implemented via Google Tag Manager.

Note: This works in most of the cases but can potentially cause issues as you are loading a tag manager (Piwik PR0) via another tag manager (Google Tag Manager). So you might end up spending a lot of time debugging if that happens.

Howvere if you do want to enable CDP, Consent Manager etc. then this might be your only option.

Option 2:  Use Piwik PRO Code Templates in Google Tag Manager

Piwik PRO has created tag templates in Google Tag Manager for you to create all your tags in GTM and use it as your tag manager instead

Follow these steps:

  1. Find the Piwik PRO Tag Template from the community gallery
  2. Configure base tag with information about your site (Piwik PRO)
  3. From the dropdown that says "Template type" , you can select various types of event to track.
  4. For the base tag with page views used "Base tracking code"
  5. Assign "All Pages" trigger
  6. Save and publish
  7. For other event types select the appropriate "Template type" , configure with the right values for paramater.
