What is behavioral modeling?

Behavioral modeling is a statistical technique that uses machine learning to predict the behavior of a user based on their past actions. In the context of GA4, behavioral modeling can be used to estimate the data that would have been collected from users who have declined consent.

How does behavioral modeling work in GA4?

When a website or app owner implements a consent banner, Analytics will be missing data for users who decline consent. When a user declines consent in GA4, their data is not stored in cookies or user IDs. However, GA4 still collects some information about these users, such as their IP address, device type, and operating system. This information is used to train a machine learning model that predicts how the user would have behaved if they had consented to tracking.

The benefits of behavioral modeling

  • Gaining insights into user behavior without explicit consent can enable businesses to gain a deeper understanding of their users and their actions.
  • By incorporating behavioral modeling, organizations can enhance the accuracy of their analytics data, compensating for missing information from users who have opted out of consent.
  • Businesses can utilize behavioral modeling to ensure compliance with data privacy regulations, enabling them to collect and utilize user data while maintaining their users' privacy.

The limitations of behavioral modeling

  • The behavior model is not flawless.
  • It is crucial to acknowledge that the forecasts made by the model are not consistently precise.
  • Moreover, the behavior model can solely be employed to approximate the information that would have been gathered from users who have refused consent.
  • It cannot be utilized to gather fresh data from these users.

How to set up behavioral modeling in GA4

To set up behavioral modeling in GA4, you need to do the following:

  1. Enable consent mode in your GA4 property.
  2. Make sure that your consent mode implementation is correct.
  3. Wait for at least 7 days of data collection. with analytics_storage='denied'.
  4. The property accumulates a minimum of 1,000 events per day, with  analytics_storage='denied.
  5. The property has a minimum of 1,000 users per day who send analytics_storage='granted' events

Behavioral modeling is a powerful tool that can help businesses to collect and use data from users who have declined consent. However, it is important to note that behavioral modeling is not a perfect solution and it has some limitations. Businesses should carefully consider the benefits and limitations of behavioral modeling before using it.
