How to Filter Internal Traffic in Piwik PRO

In this post, I will show you how you can exclude traffic from your internal users. Internal users can be employees of your company, contactors 3rd party vendors working for your organizations etc.

The key to excluding internal traffic is the IP address of the person. Generally, if you have a physical office then getting the IP's is easy becuase most IPs' fall within a range. On the other hand if your employees or other parties classified as "internal", work remotely then getting their IP addresses will be a bit difficult.

There are two ways you can exclude internal traffic in Piwik PRO

  1. You can exclude traffic for a particular site/app in Piwik PRO
  2. You can exclude traffic for the entire account thus affecting all the site/apps within that account.

In either case you will have to get the IP address or IP address ranges that you want to exclude. So make sure to take care of this step before proceeding.

How to exclude Traffc for a Particular Site or App

  1. Log in to the Piwik PRO account
  2. Click on the Menu in the top left corner and scroll down to Administration
  3. In the Administration section, click on the site/app that you want to apply the filter to.
  4. In the right-hand panel, go to the Data Collection tab (it is the first one).
  5. Scroll down to the "Filter" section (see image below)
  6. In the "Don’t collect data from these IP addresses", box, enter the IP addresses that you want to exclude. These are the IP addresses that you collected before starting these steps.
  7. To enter any IP ranges you can use * as the wildcards

How to Exclude Traffic for the Entire Account

To exclude traffic originating from your office for the entire account, follow these steps:

  1. Log in to the Piwik PRO account
  2. Click on the Menu in the top left corner and scroll down to Administration
  3.  Go to the Setting section (see image below)
  4. Select Global site & app settings on the left hand menu
  5. In the right-hand panel, go to the Data Collection tab (it is the first one).

  7. In the "Don’t collect data from these IP addresses", box, enter the IP addresses that you want to exclude. These are the IP addresses that you collected before starting these steps.

Note:  This setting does not apply to the data that has already been collected. It will only apply to any data going forward.
